Description

Vestige is a multimedia dance-theatre performance that explores the human impulse to externalize what we cannot hold directly. Through repeated gesture and touch, a performer conjures, guides, and enters a duet with a haunting digital double. Tenderness and command intertwine as agency slips between human and machine.
Intro
Vestige is a multimedia dance-theatre performance that explores the human impulse to externalize what we cannot hold directly, and to build rituals that make the absent feel reachable.
On stage, Mio Ishikawa uses an instrument resembling a mechanical armature to conjure a ghostly double of herself. Through repeated gesture, proximity, and touch, the virtual body learns her movement language while quietly developing its own. Guidance develops into a negotiation of tenderness, authorship, and identity in real time.
The work features live motion capture technology, movement by Mio Ishikawa and Ben Green, Bunraku puppet inspired scenography, custom mechanical controllers, and a live original score by FITNESSS.
Vestige is work-in-progress and will be completed by May, 2026. The project is supported by Lincoln Center, Onassis ONX, NYU Tandon, WLab, and ZeroSpace.
